he Westerly Longbow 31 is widely recognized for its spacious and practical accommodation, which was considered massive for a 31-foot boat when introduced in 1972. Designed by Laurent Giles, the layout is highly optimized for family cruising, traditionally offering 6 to 7 berths spread across 2 main cabins with a generous standing headroom of approximately 1.80 meters (6 feet).
Forward Cabin & Walkway
• Forecabin: Features traditional V-berths that can comfortably sleep two adults, complete with under-berth storage and an overhead hatch providing ventilation and light.
• Heads Compartment: Positioned between the forecabin and the main saloon on the port side. It features a marine toilet (WC), a washbasin, a mirror, and provision for a shower faucet.
• Hanging Locker: A double hanging wet locker sits directly opposite the heads on the starboard side, providing convenient storage for foul weather gear.
Main Saloon & Dinette
• Seating & Dining: The port side features a large, comfortable L-shaped dinette area. It includes a removable table that lowers to convert the seating into a spacious double berth.
• Starboard Settee: Opposite the dinette is an additional straight settee berth that offers seating and doubles as a single bunk.
Galley & Navigation Station
• Galley: Located along the starboard side just forward of the companionway steps. It is equipped with a two-burner cooker (featuring an oven and grill), a stainless steel sink, refrigerator, and ample cabinetry for pantry storage.
• Chart Table: Situated directly aft of the galley on the starboard side. It typically uses a slide-out panel or a drop-down design that stows neatly over the quarterberth below it.
Quarterberths & Engine Room
• Twin Quarterberths: Located aft on both the port and starboard sides, extending beneath the cockpit seats toward the transom. These provide excellent, secure berths for use while underway.
• Engine Access: The engine compartment is centrally located under the companionway entry stairs and remains remarkably roomy, making maintenance accessible through both the main saloon and a cockpit hatch.
• Solid Fiberglass (GRP): The hull is constructed from solid, heavy-gauge glass-reinforced plastic (GRP/fiberglass). This lay-up predates modern thin-skin manufacturing, making the hull incredibly thick, rigid, and resistant to structural flexing.
• Keel Configuration: The standard Longbow features a cast iron fin keel (weighing roughly 4,000 to 4,200 lbs) bolted directly to the hull. This accounts for nearly 45% of the boat's overall 9,400 lb displacement, providing excellent righting moment and structural stability.
• Rudder and Skeg: It utilizes a large skeg-hung rudder. The half-skeg construction protects the rudder from debris and grounding impacts while ensuring reliable mechanical steering under heavy loads
