Zircon is a Harrison Butler Z4 tonner ,one of the best sailing boats designed by Dr Thomas Harrison Butler .
She is no 25 of the 50 or so produced and was made by Alfred Lockhart ( Marine) Ltd in Brentford in 1938/39.
Zircon has enjoyed being sailed on the East coast, around Devon and Cornwall ,and more recently back in the Solent , when re-purchased after 18years ,by the present owners.
She is a well balanced boat and a delight to sail.
The boat was given a thorough re-fit in 2023 and further works have been carried out in 2024 and 2026, making her ready to enjoy the summer.
Zircon has a comfortable cabin with sitting headroom and 2 good sized single berths with new bunk cushions 2024.
.The compact galley has a Taylors stove ,and the Forepeak has a heads compartment with sitting headroom under the fore hatch.
Construction
Carvel planked in Siberian larch copper clenched to steam bent oak timbers.
New stem made and fitted in approx year 2000 by Birdham Shipyard.
Cast iron ballast keel fastened with iron bolts. 4 keel bolts drawn and replaced with galvanised steel bolts in 2023 /24
Iron strap floors across the centreline painted in cold galvanize and finished with Zingatarfree. All new stainless steel floor bolts in 2023. Plank repairs done in way of floor bolts where necessary.
Galvanized ring frame in way of the mast.
T&G pine deck, overlaid with plywood and sheathed in glass cloth.
Small toe rail, believed to be teak, cleaned back and oiled 2026.
Varnished teak coachroof coamings with a sheathed T&G coachroof deck. Varnished teak grab rails.
Varnished teak forehatch. Varnished cockpit teak coamings, thwarts and sole. Lockers either side beneath the seats.
Transom hung rudder with tiller steering. New galvanized rudder pintles in 2023, 4th lower Pintle replaced 2024.
Rig
Fractional Bermudan sloop rig, on a varnished spruce Collars mast, new in 2018.
Stepped in a galvanised tabernacle with new bolts.
Varnished wooden boom with slab reefing.
Stainless steel wire standing rigging believed new with mast, bronze rigging screws.
Standing backstay to a galvanised 24” bumpkin, refurbished in 2023.
Galvanised stanchions, pushpit and pulpit with dyneema guard lines, removed and stored but available.
Jumper struts with upper stays to support the mast head.
All winches are non-self tailing Tufnell types. Pair of mast winches, single boom reefing winch and pair of cockpit sheet winches.
Sails from Sanders Sails in fair condition. Jib with Wykeham Martin furling system. Mainsail with battens.
Machinery
Yanmar 1GM10 diesel fitted as a reconditioned engine in 2023. Serviced annually and cared for by Owen Haisell Services, Lymington.
New engine beds fitted in 2023 with the associated metal frame shot blasted and galvanised.
30 litre stainless steel fuel tank under the aft deck.
50 litre bladder watertank.
2 x Numax 86ah 12 volt batteries for domestics and engine starting. 1 replaced in 2025. Charged from the engine alternator and a small regulated, deck mounted solar panel.
Vertical action bronze manual bilge pump aft with internal pump and automatic electric pump in engine bay.
